Please note that we dispense with
non-alphabetical elements such as diacritics or the apostrophe. Instead of these,
letter combinations are used to make the necessary distinctions. Such
combinations are applied with both a number of consonants (zh
kh ch sh
shh for ж
х ч ш щ), the palatized
vowels (je jo ju ja for е ё ю я) and the umlauts (oe ue for ө ү. The "hard sign" (ъ, or хатуугийн
тэмдэг) and the "soft sign" (ь, or зөөлний
тэидэг) will only appear after a consonant while
the letter й (хагас
и, or и
краткое in Russian) can never follow a
consonant.
